Our hens live outside on open pasture year-round, with continuous access to grass, insects, and fresh air. Pasture-raised is the highest welfare standard for egg production — it goes well beyond free-range or cage-free, which only require minimal outdoor access.

The difference starts with how the hens live. Ours forage on real pasture, eat a natural diet, and are never stressed or crowded. The result is a richer yolk, a firmer white, and a flavour you'll notice immediately.

Our hens are raised on pasture without routine antibiotics or hormones. We're a small family farm and focus our resources on animal welfare rather than certification fees. If you have specific questions about our practices, just ask — we're an open book.

It means no animal on our farm is ever killed. Male chicks are not culled at hatch. Hens are not sent to slaughter when their laying slows. Every bird lives out her full natural life here. It's that simple — and that rare.

They keep living here. Retired hens become part of our permanent flock. They still forage, dust-bathe, and do everything hens love to do — they just don't contribute eggs anymore. We consider that a fair trade for the eggs they gave us.

We raise them. Male chicks are not culled at Knotts Farm. They grow up alongside the hens and live out their lives on our pasture. It's one of the things that makes us genuinely different from almost every other egg farm.

All orders are placed through our LocalLine store at knotts-farm.localline.ca. You can order individual dozens or sign up for a CSA share for regular weekly or bi-weekly pickup.

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. When you join our CSA, you commit to a regular egg share — weekly or bi-weekly — for a season. You get a consistent supply of fresh eggs, we get the stability to plan ahead, and the animals in our sanctuary get steady support. It's a partnership.

Yes — directly. Every pasture-raised purchase you make helps fund food, medical care, and daily upkeep for the rescued animals in our sanctuary. There's no separate donation needed. Buying eggs is how you help.
